After 8 years of operating on HD2, I  got admitted to a company, that let’s you “go wild” with CATIA.Only good things, such as Product Knowledge Template, Knowledge Advisor, GAS – I even had resources to do Variable Fillet with Keep Edge 🙂 When it came to this “debauchery”, and I was tasked with modal analysis in CATIA – then I remembered, that there’s a tool called Product Engineering Optimizer. I fell into a daydream about creating design table out of standard pipes – connecting that design table to PEO and getting my desired Herc value… And then, zonk… PEO won’t take the configuration parameter from the design table. Now I understand that because PEO wasn’t design for such “trivial” cases – and besides, the documentation says that optimized target function must be continuous, but on the other hand, PEO has two algorithms, one suggested for continuous functions, and the other for all other cases… Design table isn’t such case 🙂 but despite lousy examples, I press on figuring out… 🙂 But as soon as you become in possession of PEO, it’s a sin not to use it, to get that feeling of relaxation in the brain 🙂 Here are few slides showing calculations in conjunction with PEO:




Described were three cases of using PEO on the same piece. In general, when you get to understand the idea of the work with PEO and its associativity with other modules – you can make your life a lot easier. Some might accuse, that PEO makes you stop thinking, but we live in times, where only product sold matters, and not the manner of its making… In one of the articles of Andrzej Welyczko titled, “The Efficiency of Spacial Modelling” ( ) PEO method was called, “a solution for lazy constructors”, holders of advanced licenses – true 🙂 when you compare it to other methods for reaching a goal described in this article. But who will win the race? Backers of professorial approach or quick result…???

2. How sure you are of the obtained tensions? The FEA tool from CATIA is just a toy, maybe you should let the profesor do the serious stuff?

Do I write a blog about FEA? Catia is used for initial analysis in order to eliminate errors on the stage of designing… I passed it to the calculation guys and they confirmed those toy calculations.

Please type product engineering optimizer in google – it will be clear.

And one of the serious FEA programs has such functionality of direct edition of the model in order to obtain the searched value of tensions? Or is it just the final verification of finished product? Maybe an approach to equip a clever constructor in toy FEA with possibility of looping the calculations will shorten the time of product creation? As in the above described case – FEA specialist just verified that part and it turned out that it complied with  assumptions. One skipped the unnecessary loops  in the construction process i.e. passing the ball – constructor-FEA specialist, as only the initially verified part was discussed…
